In the days of Byzantine rule, Eleni was the beautiful daughter of Tekfur Argiles, the governor of Alanya. The city was plagued by a ruthless pirate named Vasili who raided the coast relentlessly. Desperate to end the attacks, Argiles decided to offer his daughter in marriage to Vasili.
But Eleni's heart belonged to another - a poor shepherd who tended his flock on the hills below the castle. When she refused her father's command, declaring "I will never marry Vasili!", the furious Tekfur imprisoned her in the castle's dungeon.
Her tiny cell had only one window, overlooking the breathtaking Damlataş Beach. Argiles believed the beauty of Alanya would eventually break her will. But Eleni never surrendered. Day and night, she wept for her lost love, her tears falling upon the barren hillside below.
Miraculously, where her tears fell, laurel, pomegranate, and silverberry trees began to grow on the once-barren slopes between the castle and Damlataş.
To this day, whenever rain falls on Alanya and the scent of laurel fills the air, the people remember Eleni's tears. Her spirit, they say, still weeps for love that could never be.
