About

s Old Kingdom civilization. The Great Pyramid of Khufu (also known as the Pyramid of Cheops) is the largest, originally standing 146.6 meters tall with a base covering 5.3 hectares. Constructed from approximately 2.3 million limestone blocks, each weighing an average of 2.5 tons, it remained the tallest man-made structure on Earth for nearly 3,800 years. The precision of its construction is staggering: the base is level to within just 2.1 centimeters across its entire 230-meter length, and its sides are aligned to true north with an accuracy of 3/60th of a degree. The second pyramid, built for Pharaoh Khafre, appears taller due to its elevated position on the plateau, and uniquely retains a cap of its original smooth white limestone casing stones at its apex. The smallest of the three, Menkaure's pyramid, was partially clad in expensive Aswan granite, demonstrating the extraordinary resources devoted to these royal tombs. Together with the Great Sphinx, the workers' village, causeways, valley temples, and satellite pyramids, the Giza complex represents the pinnacle of pyramid-building civilization and remains the most visited archaeological site on Earth.

Historical Significance

The Giza pyramid complex represents the absolute zenith of ancient Egyptian civilization and pyramid construction. Built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom — often called the "Age of the Pyramids" — these monuments required the mobilization of the entire Egyptian state's resources over multiple decades. The Great Pyramid of Khufu alone is estimated to have taken 20 years to construct, employing a workforce of approximately 20,000-30,000 skilled laborers working in rotating three-month shifts. Recent archaeological discoveries at the workers' village have revealed that these were not slaves but paid, well-nourished workers who received medical care and were honored with burial near the pyramids. The complex served not merely as royal tombs but as cosmic machines designed to ensure the pharaoh's immortality and the continuation of Ma'at — the divine order of the universe. The internal chambers, passages, and shafts of the Great Pyramid were aligned with specific stars, particularly those in the constellation of Orion (associated with Osiris) and the circumpolar stars, connecting the deceased pharaoh to the eternal heavens. The Giza complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 as part of the Memphis and its Necropolis, recognizing it as one of humanity's most extraordinary achievements and an irreplaceable testament to ancient civilization.

Old Kingdom (rediscovered 1990)

لألفين وخمسمئة سنة، صدَّق العالَم كذبةً واحدة: أنّ الأهرام بناها عبيدٌ يُساقون بالسِّياط. ثمّ تعثَّر حِصان، وانهار كلّ شيء.
