서기 32년, 예루살렘 성 밖에서 예수가 십자가에 못 박히던 바로 그 시대. 시리아 사막 한복판의 도시 팔미라에서는 사제들이 거대한 신전을 완성했다. 바빌론의 마르둑과 그리스의 제우스를 닮았지만 어느 쪽도 아닌, '우주의 주인' 벨에게 바치는 신전이었다. 벨의 오른편에는 태양신, 왼편에는 달의 신이 섰다. 셋이서 하늘 전체를 다스렸다.
